The Clifford

‘‘Land ahoy,Port Nelson’‘, shouted one of the crew. We have seen land came across the Tasman Bay. I was relieved that we were almost there, because we had been on board for four months.

It was terrible on the boat during the storms, the waves were crashing against the boat so you couldn’t get to sleep. You also had to share a cabin with the rest of your family even if there was five people in the family. We are in cabin class, so it’s not so full of people. We were in the cabins so it was more comfortable than in the steerage.

On the main deck there were always lots of people. the people from steerage brought their mattresses up and dried them when it was sunny. Little boys ran around and lots of chickens crowing all day. The first night on the Clifford every one was being sick. The people next to us just had a baby, they named it after the boat, Clifford. The baby started crying it didn’t stop crying until an hour had gone past. You couldn’t even hear yourself talking with a new born baby crying as loud as it can.

The next day it was exiting because it was the first day of school and I was ready to meet some new friend’s to play with. There is a lot of subjects to do at school. The teacher is real nice. Mostly when it is play time my friend’s and I always play with Clifford the baby.

When my family gets on shore we are going to build a house and I ‘m going to keep some chickens and my own dog.

Port Nelson, Haven Ahoy!

"Land ahoy, Port Nelson!" the cabin boy shouted. After four months at sea now we have arrived in Nelson. Wahoo! It was a pretty exciting trip because Mrs Whatsit just had a baby and she named it Clifford, after the ship. I was pretty sick in my cabin, I had to go to the spew bucket. When I was on the Main Deck, it was very stormy, so I went inside and had a snooze in my hammock. When I woke up we were in Nelson. I was so excited that we have arrived in our new home. "Land Ahoy, Port Nelson". My family and I are on the Clifford going to Nelson. We are in steerage and there are 148 people on board. The ship is rocking a lot and I have been very sea sick. It is very sticky and hot in the steerage. I am with my 3 brothers and 2 sisters. My mother has just had a baby. We land soon.

Gymnastics.

Nelson Room children have spent the last 5 weeks in physical education taking part in gymnastics. We are so fortunate to have the hall and all the great gym gear. The children have made amazing progress. On Friday the Grade 1 students competed in the Nelson Primary Gymnastic Champs. These students had trained with Pat during lunchtimes to bring them up to standard. Caleb, Shone and Aaron represented the boys and Jazmin, Jordyn and Tanisha represented the girls. They all did extremely well and Pat and Judi were very proud to take such well mannered and polite kids to the event. They competed with great success.

Bandanna Day

Bandanna Day was a great success at Auckland Point School. We ordered plenty of beautifully coloured Canteen bandannas and sold everyone of them. The children wore them to school on Friday and we all fronted up to assembly in out bandannas.
The children wore them in a wide variety ways, around their necks, hanging off their belts, around their heads, tied around their wrists and as belts. Very inventive!

Big Bouk and Little Bouk

Two chickens joined us for a day in class. We read chicken stories, chicken plays, shared chicken poems and researched hens on the net. We found out that our hens originally came from Wild Malayasian fowls.
The hens came from Kokoroa and are Red Shavers, which are kept for their eggs.

T Ball Competition

We were so excited Stoke School invited us to a T Ball Competition. Unfortunately it was cancelled because it was raining. We had been practising each day, we can wack the ball, run around the bases and are getting really good at fielding the ball into home base.
