Gymnastics.

Nelson Room children have spent the last 5 weeks in physical education taking part in gymnastics. We are so fortunate to have the hall and all the great gym gear. The children have made amazing progress. On Friday the Grade 1 students competed in the Nelson Primary Gymnastic Champs. These students had trained with Pat during lunchtimes to bring them up to standard. Caleb, Shone and Aaron represented the boys and Jazmin, Jordyn and Tanisha represented the girls. They all did extremely well and Pat and Judi were very proud to take such well mannered and polite kids to the event. They competed with great success.

Bandanna Day

Bandanna Day was a great success at Auckland Point School. We ordered plenty of beautifully coloured Canteen bandannas and sold everyone of them. The children wore them to school on Friday and we all fronted up to assembly in out bandannas.
The children wore them in a wide variety ways, around their necks, hanging off their belts, around their heads, tied around their wrists and as belts. Very inventive!

Big Bouk and Little Bouk

Two chickens joined us for a day in class. We read chicken stories, chicken plays, shared chicken poems and researched hens on the net. We found out that our hens originally came from Wild Malayasian fowls.
The hens came from Kokoroa and are Red Shavers, which are kept for their eggs.

T Ball Competition

We were so excited Stoke School invited us to a T Ball Competition. Unfortunately it was cancelled because it was raining. We had been practising each day, we can wack the ball, run around the bases and are getting really good at fielding the ball into home base.

Fun photos in the dandelions

While Nelmac wait for the daffodils tops to dry off in Moller Fountion Park, the dandelions are flowering madly. Just for fun we popped across the road and the children took some wild and wacky photos.

Netguide Web challenge

St Vincent Room are finalist in the Netguide Web Challenge. The children used us as demonstrators to Wet Comb. We were photographed and some of our images were in the final cut. Well done St Vincent Room. We hope you win.

Kapa Haka

Each Tuesday we join Matua Madsen in the hall for Kapa Haka. The children are loving this special time when we sing waiata, learn the haka and practice stick games. Matua Madsen makes learning fun.

Our school magnolia

Spring has come to Auckland Point School.  The magnolia outside the senior block is covered in pink and white flowers.  The new magnolias we have planted in the Moller Fountain Park are not yet in flower but we are watching them closely for the first flower.  The daffodils are beginning to come through and this week we will finish our dinosaurs to put out on display.

Maths in Nelson Room

We are working on numbers. First we have to take a 2 digit number out of the box. One person has to show the number on the abacus and the other person has to make it on the place value sticks.
What number have we made?
Samantha,Isabella and Jazmin

Ceramics

Nelson Room children are learning about ceramics this term in Art. We are enjoying working with clay each week. Already the children have made some amazing animals, faces and shape. We plan a visit to MacMillan Pottery in Richmond to see a working pottery. We hope to make piece of pottery and it will be fired to biscuit ware. It is a favourite activity.

Happenings in Nelson Room

Grace is away on sick leave and Suzie is working with Matt and the children in Nelson Room. Suzie is a teacher who comes in regularly to work with us.

New Trees in Moller Fountain Park
Written by Nelson Room Children

Yesterday we walked over to the park to meet up with Steven and Peter from Nelmac. We had been invited to replant the five magnolias in the park.
Last year we wrote to the Mayor of Nelson to ask him if he was going to plant any trees, to replace the 2 big trees the Nelmac men cut down after the big storm. We told him he should plant magnolias because we had one outside St.Vincent Room and it was beautiful in Springtime.
Mr Mayor wrote us a letter and said “Yes, you can plant them with the Nelmac workers”.
So we helped Rachel and Steve put the trees in the holes and add the fertiliser and the daffodil bulbs around the top. Steven dug the holes, cause that was real hard work.
BUT...in the Christmas holidays some vandals destroyed our magnolias..they just broke them off at the trunks, they didn’t care about our trees.
We were mad.....so we wrote to Mr Mayor again and said we wanted to plant the new trees. We had to wait until Nelmac had big enough trees to plant.
The trees are very big and they were very heavy. We used the spades and shovels to put the dirt around the trees. We even stuck the daffodils back around the trunks. Peter stomped the dirt in.
Mr Mayor sent a photographer down to take our photo and Colin Smith came to take our photos for the Nelson Mail. We were in the paper the next day.
Nathaniel is in the front and Shone,Louis,Rowan,Mattie,Imogen and Steven are helping push the dirt in the hole. Peter is hold ing the tree.
We wrote Nelmac to say thank you and sent them a photo.
We have promised to look out for our trees.
In spring we are putting dinosaurs around the daffodils and magnolias so the people can smile as they go to town.

Winter Challenge from the NMHB

Our school was chosen to take part in The Winter Challenge, this was organised by NMHB to encourage children to take up the challenge to get into fresh foods and get into action and get healthy.  All children received an orange bag which contained bean seeds, recipes for soup, ideas for activities, snap and ride reflective bands and a game. The team from NMHS came into school and cooked pumpkin soup. All the school got to enjoy this with raw carrot and oranges to follow. An all orange day!
Nelson Room with help from Grandma Heather made bone soup later in the week. Judi supplied the tasty bone....and we all brought along something tasty to put in the pot. Caleb had 3 bowls of soup, so it must have been good

Writing descriptions

Grandma is Wendy’s mum, she makes me super clothes. She made my hoodie. Grandad is Grandma’s husband. He lives with my Grandma. Grandad does lots of building. He builds boats.

 Steven.  June 3rd. 2009

Granddad Macalister is my grandad. He is 85 years old.  He went on a submarine in World War 2. He survived it! His bonfire is on everyday. He’s there, most people complain about it.

Grandad is a bit deaf. He’s married, his wife’s name is Shirley. I think their house is too big for them.  He has four boats in the sounds, one yacht, one speed boat and two row boats. I go there sometimes for sleepovers. We go to Pig Bay together and catch fish.  Louis. June 3rd 2009

We created our own dinosaur with Judi's bone collection.  We worked co-operatively to make an enormous Swimmasaurus on the carpet in Nelson Room. In the bone box we found skulls, thigh bones, fish bones, anthers, tusks and lots of teeth! It is 3 metres long and has multi heads.

Judi's got new knees and Mr Marshall and Megan taught us in Nelson Room.
We all made paper mache masks.  First we put paper mache all over our balloons.   Mr Marshall cut our balloons and then we got to put on noses and google eyes and ears. We all painted our masks and got to decorate them. They look great. We want to hang them in the hall, for everyone to see.
